Wednesday, Dec. 5 is a federal National Day of Mourning to mark the death of former President George H.W. Bush, who passed away Friday evening in Houston.
President Bush had an outstanding record of public service during his lifetime, and his contributions to the United States and the world are much appreciated.
In recognition of his service, federal offices will be closed and federal employees will have the day off on Wednesday. As a Department of Energy contractor managed by the University of California, the Lab will remain open and conduct its business as usual on Wednesday.
Our flags will fly at half-mast for 30 days in tribute to President Bush. As the nation mourns his passing, this is an excellent opportunity to reflect on public service and what that means to us as stewards of our federal national labs.
