UC is spearheading a statewide effort to advance the purchase of 1 million high-quality, energy-efficient light bulbs for UC buildings and residences across the state. Abstracts are being accepted for research on such topics as climate and energy security, predictive biology, space situational awareness, complex computer simulations with theoretical underpinnings, non-proliferation, advanced manufacturing, and materials science. The Lab will join forces with UC Berkeley and the Lawrence Hall of Science for the June 15 event, part of the University of California’s WellBeing Initiative. The walk will take 30 minutes (other activities are planned for those unable to walk) and conclude with a wellness fair at the Lab. Go here to register. The Council of UC Staff Assemblies (CUCSA) is seeking a new Berkeley Lab junior delegate. CUCSA is comprised of delegates from each UC location. This is a two-year term, and delegates meet quarterly at different UC locations to discuss and work on initiatives that impact staff with top UC administrators and regents. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, the University of California’s “Stigma-Free” webinar series will feature a discussion by award-winning speaker and author Ross Szabo on how to improve efforts to raise awareness of mental health. The webinar runs from 11 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23. More>
As part of the University of California’s WellBeing Initiative, employees have access to resources based on these four pillars: emotional, financial, nutritional, and physical. The initiative includes a variety of tools for staff, such as links to behavioral health providers, classes on budgeting, and access to diabetes-prevention programs, among other offerings. More>
This morning, May 7, the AFSCME began strike activities across the UC System. UPTE announced it will strike Tuesday morning, May 8. Lab employees are represented by both unions. This morning, small groups were picketing at Hearst and Gayley, Grizzly Gate, and on Centennial Drive. Checks of vehicles entering all Lab gates were conducted to ensure that people use the correct gates. Traffic delays were minimal. More>
Next week, three University of California bargaining units (unions) that represent Berkeley Lab employees are planning to conduct strikes across the UC system. Strike activity is expected to begin Monday morning, May 7. At Berkeley Lab, the strike will cause gate restrictions, shuttle bus route changes, and other possible disruptions, whether or not picketing occurs. More>
The virtual 5K will be held May 12 through May 20. Participants can run/walk their 5K any time during that week, track their run using one of several popular tracking apps, and submit a screenshot of their run.
