NSF Institute to Include Lab Physicists in Big Data R&D

With $25 million in funding, the National Science Foundation’s Institute for Research and Innovation in Software will develop systems to help manage the large amounts of data produced by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). As part of this effort, Lab physicist Heather Gray and other Lab scientists (in association with UC Berkeley) will focus on reconstructing the paths of particles produced in LHC experiments. More>

High-Energy Nuclear Collisions, Large-Scale Computing Aid Study of Early Universe

ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is a detector in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) ring designed to investigate quark-gluon plasma, the primitive matter that filled the early universe. Berkeley Lab’s Nuclear Science Division, in partnership with IT’s Scientific Computing Group, has recently established a new site on the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid to provide a significant amount of ALICE computing and data storage. Fermilab’s Role in DESI Project

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) project – which created the largest 3D map of galaxies to date – is managed by Berkeley Lab. According to a Fermilab article, Fermilab is providing specialty systems for collecting and analyzing the galactic light, including a corrector barrel, which plays a critical role in holding DESI’s six giant lenses in perfect alignment. Wildfires Have Changed; The Technology to Fight Them Hasn’t — Yet

Technologies like drones and satellites can help pinpoint wildfires in their early stages, provide comprehensive overviews of those currently raging, and track containment. FUEGO (Fire Urgency Estimator in Geosynchronous Orbit) uses detectors to gather images, spatial data, results from simulations, and local weather, and turns it into intelligence “that’s actionable,” said the Lab’s Carl Pennypacker. Faced with the challenge of intelligent data reduction, some physicists are trying to use a machine learning technique called a “deep neural network” to dredge the sea of familiar events for new physics phenomena. Lab’s Heather Gray Wins IUPAP Young Scientist Award

The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics announced their Young Scientist Prize winners, and among recipients in the “Particle and Fields” section is ATLAS researcher Heather Gray. She was recognized for her “strong role in the searches and initial measurements of Higgs boson interactions with quarks.” More>
