Work to improve the walkways along Smoot Road will begin this month. Expect periodic lane closures between the Integrative Genomics Building and Building 70 to allow for materials and equipment. Expect all-day lane closures Nov. 3-4, and early morning closures Nov. 5-16. Contact Greg Mason at x2655 with questions or concerns.
Work on the Lab’s waterline replacement project, beginning Oct. 30 and continuing into the following week, will require traffic controls and some parking impacts near the Building 50 complex, as well as Buildings 62, 66, 72, and 72C. In the wee morning hours on Oct. 22, a night of foraging was coming to an end for a rat. So was the critter’s life. But this tragic end was no match for a group of electricians, plant maintenance technicians, HVAC technicians, electrical engineers, and a carpenter, who pitched in to get the lights back on for the 726 people who work in the Building 50 complex. Here’s a chronicle of what they did to get the Lab back up and running.
Lab services have returned to normal today following a three-day strike by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) EX bargaining unit, and a sympathy strike by the AFSCME SX unit and the University Professional & Technical Employees (UPTE) units TX and RX. All three gates are open to all Lab traffic on normal schedules, and the shuttle bus routes have returned to normal.
A waterline replacement project will begin subsurface utilities verification in the roads around Buildings 71 and 62 and the Building 50 garage for several weeks beginning Wednesday, Oct. 24. Controlled traffic interruptions in the area are expected. At this time, road closures are not planned. For more information, contact Susan McCutchan (x4854).
The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) EX bargaining unit has notified the University of California of its intent to conduct a UC-system-wide strike next week. The strike is expected to begin on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 4 a.m. and end Friday, Oct. 26 at 3:59 a.m. At the Lab, gate restrictions and shuttle bus route changes will be in place during the strike, along with other changes. Berkeley Lab has a unique honorific for Nobel prize winners, according to the Wall Street Journal. The Lab “has for decades named streets for its winners. The hilly 202-acre facility is dotted with signs for a dozen such stars, including Alvarez Road, Lee Road, McMillan Road, Perlmutter Road and Segrè Road.” Article access requires a subscription, or search via Facebook.
A new schedule and route for the Rockridge BART shuttle starts Monday, Sept. 24. There will also be an additional shuttle added to the Blue route to ease overcrowding. The Rockridge BART route will run shuttles every 30 minutes during the morning and afternoon commute, and they will now be timed closer to the BART schedule. More>
Contractors will be replacing a utility valve on Glaser Road at the east end of Buildings 77 and 77A through Sunday, Sept. 30. (The work began Wednesday, Sept. 19). The lane will remain open during construction; please watch your speed through the area.
