This Multitasking Solar Cell Makes Hydrogen Fuel and Electricity at the Same Time

Researchers at Berkeley Lab and the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis, a DOE Energy Innovation Hub, have developed an artificial photosynthesis device called a “hybrid photoelectrochemical and voltaic (HPEV) cell” that turns sunlight and water into two types of energy – hydrogen fuel and electricity. Berkeley Lab Quantum Science EFRC Receives DOE Funding

A new Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) led by Berkeley Lab is among 42 EFRC projects to collectively receive $100 million in funding from the DOE. The Center for Novel Pathways to Quantum Coherence in Materials will build on unique Lab capabilities and expertise in quantum materials and quantum coherence to develop new approaches to quantum information science and technology. Jeff Neaton Selected as Energy Sciences Associate Laboratory Director

Neaton was selected after an international search. As the former Molecular Foundry director and former Materials Sciences Division acting director, Neaton has a distinguished record of Energy Sciences Area leadership. He is a member of the UC Berkeley Physics Department and will serve as Foundry acting director until a successor is named. More>

Financial Education Workshops This Month

The workshops — hosted by the Energy Sciences Area and led by Nancy Pargot of Fidelity — include “The UC retirement System (March 9),” “Creating Budgets, Reducing Debt, and Building Savings” (March 17), and “Women and Investing” (March 24). A workshop on leaves of absence, including disability benefits, FMLA, and parental leave, will be held March 22. More>

Lab Researchers Among Those Named Bakar Fellows

UC Berkeley’s Bakar Fellows Program fosters faculty entrepreneurship in the STEM+ fields. Fellows receive support to translate their discoveries into commercial solutions. Among the newest fellows are the Lab’s James Hurly of the Biosciences Area, and Ali Javey, Jeff Long, and Jie Yao of the Energy Sciences Area. More>

DePaolo Retirement Party on June 24

Don DePaolo, the ALD for the Energy Sciences Area, is retiring after 28 years with the Lab. To honor his career, a celebration is being held on Friday, June 24, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the cafeteria.

DePaolo to Step Down; Energy Sciences ALD Search to Begin Soon

Don DePaolo will step down as Associate Laboratory Director for Energy Sciences on June 30. DePaolo joined the Lab as a Faculty Scientist in 1988 and became Director of the Earth Sciences Division in 2007. He was appointed ALD for the Energy & Environmental Sciences Area in 2011. More>
