The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) recently issued a landmark report: Sexual Harassment of Women: Climate, Culture, and Consequences in Academic Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Highlights can be found here. It was developed to the high standard that all NASEM studies are held to, and its recommendations underscore the critical importance of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office at Berkeley Lab. Among the report’s findings:
“Academic institutions, research and training sites, and federal agencies should move beyond interventions or policies that represent basic legal compliance and that rely solely on formal reports made by targets. Sexual harassment needs to be addressed as a significant culture and climate issue.”
“Academic institutions should work to create a diverse, inclusive, and respectful environment where these values are aligned with and embedded into the systems, structures, policies, and procedures of the institution.”
Implementing these approaches is vital to the Laboratory. We will work to ensure they become a central part of our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiative. Additional resources and ways to get involved are available here.
