Jiannan Wang, a postdoctoral researcher in the Geophysics Department in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Area at Berkeley Lab, won first place in a Lab employee photo contest for an evening time-lapse photo showing the Advanced Light Source dome, and also had three other entries that placed in the top 10. Wang’s first place photo also received the most online votes as the People’s Choice winner of the contest.

Berkeley Lab employees, affiliates, contractors, and those who conduct research at Berkeley Lab were invited to participate in the contest. Participants were allowed to submit up to five photos that were taken from June 4, 2017, to June 3, 2018.

The contest rules required that all of the entered photos must have been taken on the Lab grounds or otherwise feature the Lab in some way.

The panel of judges assembled for the contest included Ken Light, a photojournalism professor at UC Berkeley; Kelly J. Owen, a professional photographer who leads social media efforts at the Lab; Marilyn Chung, Lab photographer and videographer; and John Christensen, a Lab employee who leads our Lab Photo Club. Judges picked the top 10 photos from 68 submitted photos.

The top 10 photos selected by the judges were then displayed online for People’s Choice voting by employees.

The following are the judges’ top 10 photo selections, in order of priority (No. 1 is the winner and No. 10 is the judges’ 10th choice). Below this list are the rankings of the top three People’s Choice winners.
