Director’s Message on New Communications Officer

I’m pleased to announce the appointment of John German to the new position of Chief Communications Officer, effective Feb. 12, 2018. John’s appointment is part of the reorganization announced in May of last year, designed to more closely align our communications effort with Lab strategy and to integrate it more successfully into our strategic planning. John will head up the newly formed Strategic Communications department and will report to me.

He comes to us with a wealth of expertise in communications leadership, science communications, and media relations. Previously he directed the strategic communications and media relations team for research at Arizona State University. Prior to that, John designed and led the Santa Fe Institute’s first communications program. He has also served at a national lab as a senior communicator at Sandia, where he advised lab management, led the corporate communications and media relations teams, served as the lab’s primary spokesperson, planned and coordinated crisis and emergency communications, and developed new communication tools.

John says he is “eager to get started and proud to become part of Berkeley Lab.” Please join me in welcoming John to the Berkeley Lab community.
