COO Michael Brandt on Departure of Facilities Director Reva Nickelson

Dear LBNL Colleagues,

It is with mixed emotions that I write to tell you that Facilities Director Reva Nickelson will be leaving her position at Berkeley Lab to join Lawrence Livermore National Lab as their Principal Associate Director for Operations and Business effective April 13, 2018. While this is an incredible opportunity for Reva, we at LBNL will miss her leadership and are grateful for her outstanding contributions in leading the facilities and the protective services organizations in Operations. I have known Reva for several years, and greatly respect her many talents in operations management. Her strategic partnership across operations and with the research community has resulted in a solid infrastructure plan that supports the mission and future vision of LBNL research.

Reva came to Berkeley Lab from Idaho National Lab nearly four years ago, and since that time has established a distinguished record of accomplishments. Reva worked with her Facilities team to continuously improve effectiveness, efficiency and teamwork while maintaining her focus on work planning and control, safety and follow through. She built strong partnerships across the Lab, and with her counterparts at the other national labs and DOE. During her tenure at LBNL, Reva led and implemented a comprehensive plan to identify and address deferred maintenance. Working with Lab leadership, she developed a 10-year Infrastructure Strategy and a Deferred Maintenance Reduction Plan that she presented to DOE headquarters last June. Her vision and leadership have helped the Lab to gain the confidence of DOE to invest in infrastructure improvements here. Finally, in addition to managing an annual portfolio of ~100 construction projects in her first three years, Reva led the completion and transition to Operations of Wang Hall, Chu Hall, and GPL, as well as the planning and first stages of construction for the Integrative Genomics Building.

Facilities Deputy Division Director Steve Lindberg will serve as Interim Facilities Director as we conduct a national search for Reva’s replacement. Steve joined LBNL three years ago as the Maintenance and Operations Department Head and was named Facilities Deputy in September 2017. He came to LBNL from Idaho National Lab, where he had a 40 year career in facilities management with increasing leadership responsibility.

Please join me in wishing Reva the best of luck in her new role, and in welcoming Steve to his new position.

Sincerely,
Michael
