Announcing the new Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer

Colleagues,

I am pleased to report that Lady Idos has accepted my offer to serve as the Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer for Berkeley Lab, reporting to me, beginning November 19, 2018. This new position in the Lab Directorate has been created to lead our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts. Please join me in welcoming Lady back to the Lab to continue making progress on what I believe is one of this Lab’s most important and difficult challenges.

Elevating and moving this function to the Directorate reflects the importance of our DEI efforts as a Lab-wide strategic necessity. A diverse workforce in which individuals are encouraged to contribute as fully as possible not only ensures that the Lab will continue to bring innovative solutions to our nation’s scientific challenges but also permits each of us to bring our authentic selves to work every day. I have asked Lady to build diversity, equity, and inclusion into our culture and help us make them key elements of our everyday behavior, as second nature to us as safety.

This is no small challenge, and we have a long way to go. In her role, Lady will be responsible for carrying out the recommendations of the Lab’s DEI Senior Leadership Council (the steering committee for the Lab’s DEI effort). Lady and the SLC will, in turn, work closely with the new DEI task forces and existing Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to convert the SLC’s newly formed priorities into a Lab-wide DEI strategy, with actionable goals and accountability for Lab leaders. A few weeks ago, the SLC, ERGs, and task forces met to take stock of our progress so far; their work and that of the SLC will form the basis of our next steps.

Lady has eight years experience at the Lab in roles including program manager for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and HR Business Partner. While at the Lab, she was an integral force in establishing and encouraging our ERGs and other national employee groups that foster diversity. She returns to us from Blue Shield of California where she had been a Senior Manager, Diversity and Inclusion.

I look forward to working with her and everyone at the Lab to make DEI an integral feature of our Lab culture.
