A Message From Glenn Kubiak on Operations Reorganization

Dear Colleagues,

As part of Berkeley Lab’s ongoing effort to improve the management of capital projects, address long-standing deferred maintenance and physical infrastructure needs, and advance important life safety and property protection programs, Operations is reorganizing some elements of the Facilities, Protective Services and Environment, Health and Safety Divisions, effective May 15, 2017.

The reorganization is intended to better align Operations’ organizational activities with — and provide greater support to – Lab priorities. To that end:

  • With the pending departure of Allen Benitez, the Protective Services Department will move to the Facilities Division with Kory Porter serving as the acting Department Head. This move will leverage the important common functions including 24/7 operations, engineering, and contracts. Al will continue to provide leadership support to Facilities during this transition until his departure in June.
  • To continue to strengthen and consolidate the Laboratory’s safety programs and performance, three existing functions, namely the Electrical Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), the Building Code Official (BCO), and the Fire Marshal (matrixed from Facilities), will now report to the EH&S Division Director. Employees of the BCO and the Electrical Installation AHJ programs will be combined in a new EH&S unit called Code Enforcement. With the move of the BCO to EH&S, Kirk Haley will become the Engineering Manager in Facilities.
  • Because of the number, importance, and visibility of small and large-scale construction projects at the Lab, the Project and Construction group, currently housed in Facilities, will now report to a newly created position, supervised directly by Glenn Kubiak, Deputy Director for Operations. Until the completion of a national search to fill the newly created position, Ellen Ford will serve in an interim role.

Please join me in thanking Al, Reva, Jim and Ellen for their continued leadership and teamwork in providing enabling support and effective services to help Berkeley Lab bring science solutions to the world.
