Recently I had the great honor of hosting our annual Director’s Achievement Awards ceremony to celebrate many of the individuals and teams who have done outstanding work in the performance or support of the Lab’s research mission. This event gives our Laboratory community – and our families and friends — the opportunity to recognize the extraordinary efforts of those who have spent their careers in advancing science for the nation. This is a chance for us to honor stellar accomplishments in all of the functional areas of the Laboratory, including outreach, operations, diversity, tech transfer, service and societal impact. This year, we were pleased to use our highest awards to recognize the impressive careers of Carl Haber, Richard Russo, Michael Banda and Mary Sidney.
We could not have put this event together without the hard work and dedication of the Lab-wide Recognition Committee. This committee is comprised of representatives from each Scientific Area, the Lab Directorate, Operations, and the Diversity and Inclusion Council.
In addition, we owe a debt of gratitude to the Division committees, who are the first to review their nominations, and must choose only two to move forward in the process. From this selection, the Lab-wide Recognition Committee reviews and ranks each nomination to find the top three in each award area, and the nominators of these candidates are invited to make their case in person to the Committee. The Committee then ranks the nominations one final time, and recommends to the Lab Director up to 15 Director’s Award and two Berkeley Lab Prize Nominations. In consultation with the Deputy Laboratory Directors, the Lab Director makes the final determination.
Early next year we will issue the call for the 2018 awards. I urge you to consider nominating one of the outstanding individuals or teams in your area. Our people are our most valuable asset, and these awards give us the opportunity to show our tremendous appreciation and gratitude for their dedication and commitment.
