Aug. 8 Evacuation of Bldg. 67 Complex

August 10 Update

Portions of Building 67 (Molecular Foundry) were reopened in stages on Thursday as Foundry and Lab EHS teams performed walkthrough inspections to identify potential remaining hazards. Water damage was found to be minimal. As of 4:00 pm Thursday, Building 67 had resumed normal operations except for restrictions in specific labs and offices.

The inspections followed an evacuation on Tuesday evening, August 7, after an unexpected chemical reaction resulted in activation of the building’s fire suppression system and subsequent flooding of portions of the building.

No injuries were reported, and the incident presented no threat to public health or safety.

2 p.m., Aug. 8, Update:

At approximately 8:00 p.m. last evening, a contractor working on the 6th Floor of Building 67 was performing a planned chemical operation with a small quantity of chemicals inside a fume hood. An unexpected chemical reaction resulted in the activation of the building’s fire suppression system. Overnight, water from the fire sprinklers dripped to the floors below.

No injuries were reported. The incident presents no public health or safety concern.

This morning, incident responders were taking a cautious approach, evaluating potential electrical hazards as well as possible chemical hazards associated with the flooding and with the small quantities of chemicals that remained in the affected room. Buildings 67, 66, 62, 62A, 72, 72A, 72B, and 72C were evacuated.

Note that reentry to the evacuated buildings may not be permitted until tomorrowmorning or later, after all potential hazards have been evaluated and the affected areas are deemed safe.

Lawrence Road remains closed from the S Lot inside the Strawberry Gate to the driveway to Building. 31. Access to Building 31 maybe restricted. Lab gates are open, but no left turns from the Strawberry Gate entrance toward the Building 67 Complex are permitted.

All onsite personnel are asked to avoid the area.

The Blue Shuttle Route is disrupted in the area; there will be no shuttle access to the Building 67 or Building 77 stops for the remainder of the day.
