Updates on Dec. 19 Mass Evacuation Drill

Berkeley Lab will be conducting a rapid mass evacuation drill on Tuesday, December 19, starting at 2:30 pm.
Go here for an overview of the objectives and scope of the drill.

The information below offers clarifications to questions received by Emergency Management:

• Protective actions associated with the drill, such as shelter in place and evacuation to Foothill Lot, are expected to end at approximately 3:30 p.m. However, normal operations at the Lab may not resume for several more hours. Specifically, roads in Zone 1 and Zone 2 will not be open to vehicle traffic until personnel have returned from Foothill Lot to their work locations. Plan after-work commitments accordingly.

• If you are in a zone that is not your “home zone,” you are expected to follow the instructions/actions of the zone that you are in. For example; if your home zone is evacuating, but you are currently in a zone that is sheltering-in-place – you are to shelter within the zone that you are in.

• If your carpool persons are in a zone that is enacting a different protective action than your zone, make alternative arrangements prior to the drill or shelter.

• No vehicular traffic will be permitted in Zones 1 and 2 during the drill. This includes the use of Gem cars.

• Personnel in Zones 1 and 2 will be using the roadways to evacuate, so no traffic will be allowed in these zones until all personnel are back at their work locations.

• After the evacuation, personnel in Zones 1 and 2 will be walking back or shuttled. Blackberry Gate will not open to vehicular traffic, except for shuttle buses, until all personnel are back in their buildings.

• If you are unsure of what action to take, ask the closest Building Emergency Team member (bright orange vests and hard hats).

• Shuttle bus services will not be available from 1 to 6 p.m. Buses will be used to return personnel from the Foothill Lot to the main site, and/or transport them to the downtown Berkeley BART station.

• A van will take personnel in Zone 3 with limited mobility to a pre-designated shelter. The shuttle van will be located at the bus stop near Building 46 to relocate personnel.

• A personnel accountability message will be sent via LabAlert asking you to indicate your status at the end of the drill. You will have 24 hours to respond and may do so by text or email. In a real emergency you will be asked to respond within one hour.

• Keep in mind that some of the evacuation routes and shelter areas you use during the drill may not be where you are sent in a real emergency.
