Over 120 people gathered in the sunny courtyard of the Joint Genome Institute campus midday last Wednesday to raise awareness about safety and wellness programs administered locally at the Joint Genome Institute, Berkeley Lab, and throughout Contra Costa County. “We had a record-breaking turnout this year for the JGI’s Eighth Annual JGI’s Safety and Wellness Fair,” said Christine Naca, JGI Safety and Wellness Team leader. “This year we really focused on expanding safety culture to include healthy living, wellness, and sustainability and I think this sparked interest which brought out some new faces.”

Organized in partnership with the JGI Employee Activity Committee (EAC), the booth participants included the JGI Emergency Response Team (ERT), Berkeley Lab Health Services, Berkeley Lab Hazard Waste Management, JGI Bike Safety Committee, doTERRA (essential oils, aromatherapy), Green Smoothies, JGI Ergonomics, Berkeley Lab Electrical Safety, Sustainable Berkeley Lab, JGI’s neighbor, Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF), East Bay Municipal Utilities District (EBMUD).

“It was funny to see that the Berkeley Lab Electrical Safety Team was blowing up hot dogs in their demo right next to where the EAC was BBQing hot dogs,” Naca mused.
