Today at Berkeley Lab

In Memoriam: Angela Anne Gill-Johnson (1947-2014)

Written by colleagues in the Chemical Sciences Division

gillAngela passed away unexpectedly while traveling with friends in Tapei, Taiwan on Thursday, Nov. 7.

Angela was born in Hong Kong, moving to the United States in 1968. She began her career at Berkeley Lab as an analyst and rose to become the Deputy Director for Operations in the Chemical Sciences Division. She retired after more than 15 years at Berkeley Lab in June of 2013.

Angela (pictured with her grandson Jagger) was a most congenial, energetic and particularly dedicated person who found innovative and effective solutions to complex and difficult problems. Her greatest strength, however, was in ensuring that problems never arose in the first place. Angela was renowned for looking after the division’s program members with great care, from graduate students up, and for the memorable holiday events that she and her staff hosted.

“Angela worked tirelessly on behalf of our PIs, staff and students to ensure the effective operation of the division. I personally relied on her thoughtful counsel during the many years I have been involved in division management,” said Chemical Sciences Division Director Ali Belkacem. “Surely all of us will miss her. Our thoughts are with her family during this difficult time.”

Away from work and in retirement, Angela enjoyed traveling with her husband, cooking, and being with friends and family.

Angela is survived by her loving family – husband Richard, sons Troy and Justin, daughter in-law Lucia, and grandchildren Madisyn, Ethan, and Jagger, and many at Berkeley Lab who were truly part of her “family”.

Visitation will be at Graham-Hitch Mortuary, 4167 First Street in Pleasanton on Friday, Nov. 14 from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 2601 Valley Blvd. in San Ramon on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 11:00 AM with reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the charity of your choice in the name of Angela Gill.
