CRD’s Colella Named Chair of Lab Staff Committee

Phil Colella, a Senior Scientist in the Computational Research Division, has been named as chair of the Laboratory Staff Committee (LSC).

“I would like to thank Phil for accepting this important post and to thank our immediate past Chair Natalie Roe and the entire Committee
for their dedication to serving the institution,” said Lab Director Paul Alivisatos.

Colella previously served on the LSC from October 2008 to July 2011.

The Laboratory Staff Committee advises the Laboratory Director on matters concerning Laboratory-wide consistency in the quality of the scientific staff and on divisional procedures for selection and appointment.

It is also charged with:

• Reviewing the numerical balance of Distinguished and Senior Scientist/Engineer employees in each Division in terms of its needs and resources;

• Reviewing all recommended appointments and dismissals for Divisional Fellows, Senior Scientists/Engineers, Distinguished Scientists/Engineers, Faculty Senior Scientists/Engineers, along with several other categories;

• Reviewing all proposed reductions in force of Distinguished and Senior Scientists/Engineers and all proposed terminations due to lack of funding of Joint Laboratory/UC Appointments (50/50) for Faculty Scientists/Engineers and Faculty Senior Scientists/Engineers.

“The LSC is one of the most important committees at Berkeley Lab,” said Alivisatos, “with a central role in the long-term intellectual vitality of our community.”

Colella is the leader of the Applied Numerical Algorithms Group. The principal focus of his current work is the development of new simulation software tools for multiscale problems in science and engineering. He has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 2004.

Members of the LSC serve terms of up to three years and may be considered for reappointment. Colella’s term will expire in 2015.
