Major DESI Components Arrive at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona

Components for the Berkeley Lab-led Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) recently arrived at Kitt Peak National Observatory and were delivered inside the Mayall Telescope dome. The components will become part of the support structure for DESI’s sensitive fiber-optic positioners that will capture light from millions of distant galaxies. More>

New Exascale Earth System Model Developed

Experts from the Earth and Environmental Sciences Area focused on developing improved representations of land processes as part of an effort to create DOE’s new high-resolution Exascale Earth System Model. The model was recently released to the scientific community. A team led by Bill Collins and Bill Riley participated in the project with other national labs. More>

CRD’s Goldstein Named NASA Hubble Fellow

Danny Goldstein of the Computational Research Division is one of 24 postdocs selected to participate in the NASA Hubble Fellowship Program, which enables independent research in any area of NASA astrophysics. Goldstein’s research focuses on strong gravitational lensing, cosmology, and the discovery, observation, and theoretical modeling of astrophysical transients.

Tech Institute Gives Posthumous Achievement Award to Former Lab Researcher

As part of its annual alumni awards, the Illinois Institute of Technology posthumously bestowed its lifetime achievement award to Robert Bragg (scroll to seventh entry). . In 1969, Bragg accepted a joint appointment with Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley. At the time, he was one of only six African American faculty members on campus. He passed away last October at the age of 98. More>

Spring Intern Poster Session Today at 3:30 p.m.

The work of 27 undergraduates and postbaccalaureates who spent the spring participating in the BLUR, CCI, and SULI programs will be on display during a poster session from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Cafeteria on Wednesday, April 25. Workforce Development & Education interns work with world-class scientists and engineers on projects related to the Lab’s cutting-edge research programs.
