Report Outlines Vision for Improving STEM Graduate Education

Biosciences ALD Mary Maxon served on a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine committee that recently released a report on “Graduate STEM Education for the 21st Century.” The report describes the attributes of an ideal STEM graduate education system, identifies core educational competencies common across all STEM fields, and recommends changes to make the graduate education system more student-centric. As a career employee who works at the lab full time I was informed by UCB’s M&CB that there aren’t any part time Ph.D. programs, nor do they know of any way to pursue a Ph.D. in concert with my job. This makes pursuing a Ph.D. cost-prohibitive (not all of us can afford to quit and take a $36k/year stipend).

    There is an opportunity here to make the system more student-centric.
