Ferromagnetism Emerges to Alleviate Electrical Mismatch

An electrical mismatch between two materials, fabricated and joined with atomic precision, leads to a “polar catastrophe” that induces ferromagnetism where there was none before. X-ray experiments at the Advanced Light Source help understand such phenomena, which could enable new types of electronics for a range of applications, including logic, memory, sensing, and more.
