Lab Fiber Optic Earthquake Detection Research Featured on ABC 7 News

The local TV newscast interviewed Jonathan Ajo-Franklin, Nate Lindsey, and Shan Dou for the story, which highlights their research using “dark” fiber optic cables — installed by telecom companies but currently not in use — to help detect earthquakes. The basic idea, says Lindsey, is to shine a short pulse of laser light into an optical fiber and record the backscattered photons. More>
