JGI Casts Light on ‘Dark Ocean’-Dwelling Bacteria’s Role in Carbon Capture

Enabled in part by the Joint Genome Institute’s Community Science Program, a team led by researchers from the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences identified the most abundant and globally distributed nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) in the oceans through single-cell genomics and community meta-omics. As reported in Science, they also calculated the NOB’s contribution toward trapping carbon beneath the sunlit waters. More>
