‘Spare the Air’ Days and Alternate Commute Options

During summer months, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District issues “Spare the Air” alerts when ozone levels are expected to reach unhealthy levels. On these occasions, staff can help cut down on air pollution by using Lab shuttles, carpools/vanpools, or bicycling to work. Visit commute.lbl.gov for more about these options. Sign up to receive Spare the Air Day alerts.

Bicycling to work should, if anything, be discouraged on days of high ozone. There’s at least one study by the EPA on the potentially dangerous side-effects: http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/early/2012/05/18/CIRCULATIONAHA.112.094359
Sure, carpooling is good guidance, but we should not be encouraging unhealthy activities.
