Message from Director Witherell on Orlando Shooting

Below is a note from Berkeley Lab Director Michael Witherell on the recent mass shooting in Orlando. Details on local vigils, as well as employee resources, can be found following the director’s note:

Dear friends and colleagues,

Sproul-vigil-2-720x466I want to express my deep sorrow in response to the horrific mass shooting Sunday at a popular gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. I also want to say how important the Lab’s LGBTQ community is to our success, which depends upon our ability to bring together people who have diverse backgrounds, points of view, and approaches to problem-solving. We are all united in our commitment to providing science solutions to the world. Next week, a series of events celebrating Pride Month will take place at the Lab. These events are important every year; this year they take on even more importance as an affirmation of the Lab’s values. I assure you that the Lab will continue our commitment to create a more diverse and inclusive culture, and I encourage all of our employees to support each other through this difficult time and beyond. Today, our flags are lowered to half-staff in memory of the Orlando victims and our thoughts go out to all those affected by the shooting.

Best regards,
Mike
