Computing A Textbook of Crystal Physics

Materials scientist Kristin Persson led the development of a new methodology that enabled her and a team of collaborators to compute piezoelectric constants for close to 1,000 inorganic compounds. Despite its rising technological importance, until now the piezoelectric effect has been measured in only a handful of materials. More>

Lab Participates in AWIS-UC Summit; Napolitano Keynotes

On Sept. 22, UC President Janet Napolitano gave the keynote address at the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) National Summit on Innovation & Entrepreneurship in Oakland. Berkeley Lab sponsored a table, and participants included Vera Potapenko, Elsie Quaite Randall, Jill Fuss, and several other Lab employees.

In Memoriam: Retired Engineering Technician Mario Cepeda

Cepeda was a mechanical technician in the Engineering Division. He passed away on Sept. 5. Cepeda started with the Lab in 1976 and retired last year. A celebration of Cepeda’s life will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at Music Lovers, 2116 Blake St. in Berkeley.

Onsite Retirement Planning Course on Oct. 12

Retirement counselors from the UC Office of the President’s Retirement Administration Service Center will discuss UC’s retirement benefits, describe the steps you need to take when you’re ready to retire, and answer questions. The event takes place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Building 66 Auditorium, and will be streamed live.

Lab Volunteers Help Spruce Up North Berkeley Senior Center

Seven employees spent the day painting, installing new ceiling tiles, and adhering window film to various windows, which will help create more comfortable conditions for staff and the seniors accessing support and services. Peidong Yang Named a MacArthur Fellow

Materials scientist Peidong Yang is one of 24 new MacArthur Fellows. Yang, who is also the co-director of the Kavli Energy Nanoscience Institute, was cited for “opening new horizons for tackling the global challenge of clean, renewable energy sources through transformative advances in the science of semiconductor nanowires and nanowire photonics.” More>

Lab to Investigate Link Between Thirdhand Smoke and Cancer

Researchers have been awarded $1.3 million for two sets of studies to better understand the health impacts of thirdhand smoke, the noxious residue that clings to virtually all indoor surfaces long after the secondhand smoke from a cigarette has cleared out. More>

JGI Launches Diversity & Inclusion Website

The Joint Genome Institute site features a video from Director Eddy Rubin and a video highlighting the importance of mentoring to help increase diversity in STEM fields. The website is part of the JGI Diversity & Inclusion Initiative launched in April.
