Rising Mercury No Illusion, Finds Novel Data Analysis

Using data from the 20th Century Reanalysis project hosted at NERSC, researchers have independently confirmed that land-based thermometers are largely right: temperatures are rising. Creeping urbanization, relocated weather stations and/or changes in instrumentation, among other factors, have thrown into question the validity of land-based measurements. This study used barometric pressure, sea surface temperature, and sea-ice concentrations to infer air temperatures, which largely matched those recorded by weather stations. More>
