Inaugural Meeting of MS-DESI Launches a Collaboration

March 11, 2013

In December, DOE chose Berkeley Lab to manage design and construction and operate the Mid-Scale Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (MS-DESI), creating the largest 3D map of the universe. Last Tuesday, Project Director Michael Levi of the Physics Division convened MS-DESI’s first meeting, 74 members from as far away as Australia representing Berkeley Lab’s BigBOSS and FermiLab’s DESpec proposals. Levi said: “We want to quickly extinguish BigBOSS/DESpec separation and build a world-class consortium.” Northern or Southern Hemisphere, instrument features, and basic science goals, inspired by BOSS’s spectacular achievements, were subjects of lively discussion, with the choice of telescope the number one priority.
