Space-Age Ceramics Get Their Toughest Test

Robert Ritchie of the Materials Sciences Division led a team of researchers at the Advanced Light Source in the development of an in situ ultrahigh temperature tensile test rig for obtaining real-time X-ray computed microtomography images that can be used to improve the composition and architecture of ceramic composites. These space-age ceramics promise advanced jet and gas turbine engines that burn with greater fuel efficiencies and less pollution. Working with Ritchie on this project were Hrishikesh Bale, Abdel Haboub, Alastair MacDowell, James Nasiatka, Dilworth Parkinson, Brian Cox and David Marshall. More>
