To accommodate repaving work, Gayley Road and Piedmont Ave. — from Hearst Ave. to Bancroft Way — will allow southbound traffic only. Detour information was not available from UC Berkeley at press time, but most likely will have drivers turn right on Channing Way, continue up behind the stadium and onto Centennial Drive, or down around campus to Oxford St., then over to Hearst.

am i still waking up, or is the above self-contradictory? Do you mean “Northbound Lane of Gayley/Piedmont Closed” or do you mean “Gayley Road….. will allow northbound traffic only”????

Your title says southbound lane will be closed, and the article itself says it will be open:”will allow southbound traffic only”. Which is it?
I took this to mean the southbound lane will be used for northbound traffic only. While the northbound lane is being repaved.
The announcement to the Physics Dept. on campus says that southbound traffic ONLY will be allowed during work hours. It doesn’t identify lane closures. It also doesn’t say what will happen with northbound, but the assumption is a detour.
Headline may have been confusing. According to the City of Berkeley site, only SOUTHBOUND traffic will be allowed:
