On Thursday, July 12, at noon in the Bldg 50 auditorium, Ian Hinchliffe will describe recent evidence that the Higgs boson, the last missing piece of the Standard Model, has finally been seen at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Hinchliffe will address how we can know if this is really the Higgs and what its discovery means. Berkeley Lab physicists and engineers have played major roles in building and operating the LHC’s ATLAS experiment and are now deeply involved in data analysis; after the symposium a panel discussion among four ATLAS-group physicists and a theorist will discuss the new results.
