Secretary of Energy Steven Chu yesterday detailed President Obama’s $27.2 billion FY2013 budget request for the Department of Energy. It proposes nearly $5 billion for the Office of Science, a 2.4-percent increase over funding for FY2012, and a nearly 29-percent funding increase for the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy to $2.33 billion. Other proposals include $350 million for the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), as well as $120 million for the Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRCs) and $140 million for the five existing Energy Innovation Hubs, and the establishment of a new hub to focus on grid systems and the tie between transmission and distribution systems.
