Advances on three far-flung frontiers of research are reported in the current Nuclear Science Division Newsletter — the search for neutrinoless beta decay at the Sanford Underground Laboratory, heavy quarks at Brookhaven, and super-heavy elements at the 88-Inch Cyclotron. Whether neutrinos are their own antiparticles could be answered by the Majorana Demonstrator using germanium crystals made at Berkeley Lab. The Lab’s Engineering Division is building part of an upgrade to the STAR experiment at RHIC for a closer look at quarks. And the VENUS ion source can now provide the most intense beams yet of highly charged calcium ions for creating superheavy elements. More>
